Barn conversion, Cold Ashton

The truly stunning views down through St Catherine’s Valley from this new barn conversion were both a gift and a challenge in the design of the garden. Cold Ashton is aptly named and the temperature in this elevated and windswept spot feels palpably chillier than down in the valley. So shelter was important, and it needed to be provided without obstructing the views from the house. To avoid any visible fencing a haha was constructed at the edge of the lawn and within this we designed a sunken garden, surrounded by soft, flowery borders. The fields beyond were seeded with a wildflower mix, with annuals for colour in the first season. The planting was designed in collaboration with Alison Jenkins.
