Karena Batstone Design is an award-winning garden and landscape design practice based in Bristol, working on residential, commercial and public-facing projects across the UK and beyond.

Established in 1992, the practice is led by Karena Batstone MSGLD, an experienced garden and landscape designer known for elegant, site-sensitive gardens that combine strong structure with naturalistic planting. Each project is developed with close attention to the architecture, setting and character of the site, creating gardens and landscapes that feel beautiful, practical and deeply connected to their surroundings.

Karena works with homeowners, architects, developers, cultural organisations and commercial clients on gardens and landscapes of many scales. Projects range from city courtyards, roof gardens and family gardens to country gardens, hotel landscapes, cultural venues, workplace courtyards and public-facing spaces.

Approach

The practice offers a complete garden and landscape design service, from the first consultation and concept design through to detailed proposals, planting plans and construction monitoring.

Karena’s work is rooted in a clear understanding of how each space will be used, how it will be experienced through the seasons, and how planting, materials, light and structure can work together to create atmosphere and longevity.

Whether designing a small urban garden, a larger country garden or a commercial landscape, the aim is always to create places that are refined, enduring and responsive to their setting.

Experience & Recognition

Karena has been designing gardens for more than three decades and is a registered member of the Society of Garden Designers. She has taught landscape design at the English Gardening School and co-authored A Handbook for Garden Designers with Rosemary Alexander.

Her work has been featured in a wide range of publications and on television, and she has written for the gardening press, including The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Times. Karena has also won a number of awards, including a Society of Garden Designers People’s Choice Award and a Civic Trust Award for the landscaping at the New Education Centre, The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in Regent’s Park.
